What is JHMS POP Club all about? It's simple really: PEACE! POP stands for Pieces of Peace because each of us is really one piece of peace! The JHMS POP club is similar to other global connections clubs. Our goal is to work to better understand other cultures around the world to forward peace.
This summer we had the opportunity to participate in the festivities of Ishmael Beah's visit. For those of you who don't remember, Ishmael Beah is the author of the book A Long Way Gone: A memoir about life as a child soldier. He is now working to build schools in Sierra Leone via a non profit organization Schools for Salone. The JHMS POP club sponsered two events. First, we had Dinner with Ishmael. Students learned how to cook an authentic meal from Sierra Leone. They worked with Mary Woolens and learned many cooking techniques. They then served dinner to their parents and Ishmael Beah. He shared stories and thoughts about his life and current events. (See blog for pictures: http://jhmspop.blogspot.com) It is our hope to recreate this experience four times this year with guests from our own community!
We also had a ropes course day. Although Ishmael was not able to join us, the executive director from Schools for Salone joined us - as did Doug Walker's parents. We set goals for this year. It was ana amazingly powerful day. (See blog for pictures: http://jhmspop.blogspot.com ) The was the day that we decided to raise $40,000 to build a JHMS sponsored school in Sierra Leone! Let the fundraising begin!

This club is open to interested 7th and 8th grade middle school students, and will meet in room 109 on Tuesdays after school until 3:45. We will invite sixth graders during the spring semester of the club. With help from volunteers from Square One Systems Design in Jackson, our middle school students will get up-close and personal with artificial intelligence systems. Once the robots are built, students will use a software program developed by the Carnegie-Mellon Robotics Academy to program them using touch, sound, and visual sensors. The robots will be capable of many tasks when various features are programmed. Students will work on teams to solve real-world problems and collaborate as scientists and engineers. We have registered to compete in the First Lego League competition in Casper on December 1st. If you have questions or comments, please e-mail Nancy Brumsted, P.E.A.K. teacher at: nbrumsted@teton1.k12.wy.us. LEGO Mindstorms educational materials have been purchased through a special math/technology grant through Teton County Schools. | Global Warming Hero League In the spring of 2007, the 2010 Imperative conference struck inspiration in our hearts. Our mission is to educate students and the community about the dangers of Global Warming and to work on service projects such as recycling at the Jackson Hole Middle School, Step It Up meetings, and town council meetings. We are intent on getting people to realize what we are up against. Global Warming is the warming of the earth propelled by the melting of polar ice caps and a layer of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere is dangerous to everyone of us. If we don't do anything, 50% of the earth's species could be extinct by the year 2050. However, if we change our ways only 10% will be terminated. The Global Warming Hero League began with only 13 members, but within months we are over 30 strong. Our long-term goal is to identify energy issues in schools and other public buildings and offer our energy to help repair these issues. We welcome others to join our noble cause. At this time we meet during 8th grade lunch in Mr. Periman's room, but we are encouraging others interested to talk to Mr. Periman. | INVE$TMENT CLUB BEGIN$
Want to put your money where your mouth is? How does $100,000.00 dollars sound for investing in the Stock Market? OK, it's virtual money (not real) but if you learn how to invest at school, you can make your money work for YOU when you start making an income in the not-so-distant future. This will make your parents happy when they can retire early on your income. You can also set up trust funds for your favorite teachers and become philanthropists.
You will learn to make money "grow" in this year's INVESTMENT CLUB. Coach Bob Gordon, assisted by Ms. Brumsted, will help you learn about the economy, risk, interest, compounding, portfolios, recession (oops) and many more exciting financial terms as we play the STOCK MARKET GAME and compete to make a virtual profit. The club is open to all Middle School students, and meets every other Thursday until 3:30 PM in the PLTW lab until the Stock Market Game officially begins.
Check it out! Ha ha. |
